Every summer MMCA offers summer care on its campus. Our summer care staff has been hard at work planning and prepping the lessons for the themed weeks.

In June, our neighbor, the St. Augustine Episcopal Church, will be starting the construction project on their church.  They are currently scheduled to break ground the week of June 3^rd.  They anticipate that the project will take about seven months to complete.  One small way in which we will be impacted involves the temporary placement of their construction trailer towards the beginning of our school driveway (it will be about 50 feet from our school moniker sign).  Additionally, we are going to be reserving approximately a dozen parking spots immediately next to the trailer for the church construction workers.   We anticipate that the construction trailer will be placed on the driveway at some point within the next week.  If you have any questions about the project, please feel free to contact me at brent@mmcharter.org.

Garden Work Day

There is another garden work day scheduled on May 11^th from 8:30-11:30a.  This is a great opportunity to get those last volunteer hours in!  Please bring work gloves.

Drop-off / Pick-up reminders:

Our driveway is a TWO-LANE driveway, NOT THREE.  If you are “driving through” to a parking spot, please do not pull out of line until you are past the Children’s House entrance.

The park is an alternate pick-up location, it is not intended as an alternative for child care.  Kids need to be picked up from the park by 3:30p

In order to limit the number of students calling parents after school, please make sure your child knows their pick up plan each day before you send them to school.

STAR Testing (2^nd-8^thGrade):

STAR testing starts on Monday, May 13^th, and will go through Tuesday, May 21^st.  During these testing days, we would greatly appreciate parental support in several areas, including:

o  Please make sure your child is at school on time, as we start the tests early in the morning.

o  Please make sure that your child is getting a good night’s sleep, as well as coming to school with a good high protein breakfast to help get their day started.

o  Historically most of our “STAR classrooms” will coordinate daily snacks for each room –please be on the lookout for upcoming correspondence from classroom teachers / room parents on this.

Student Council Earth Day Project

In honor of Earth Day, on Friday April 12th the MMCA StudentCouncil conducted a “trash audit.” On Monday at an assembly they reported the results of the audit with a Power Point presentation to all of our students.  Their presentation had multiple goals:

1) Raise awareness amongst all of our students about trash (plastic in particular) and how our choices can impact our trash footprint;

2) help students make better choices with what they’re doing with the components of their lunch that reduces the amount of trash they generate (examples: washing and re-using food storage containers, composting, recycling, using cloth napkins, not throwing away uneaten food, etc.)

We’re going to continue to emphasize the re-use/recycle/compost themes, including asking students to take back home wholly uneaten foods.  Thank you again for your support on this project.  For your information, the Student Council’s PowerPoint presentation and the video that they showed is available here: http://mmcharter.org/mmca-student-council-earth-day-project/.  Also, please check out www.wastefreelunches.org/
